The name forgotten liberty was originally taken on as just that: a name. it was rather cool sounding, and we had been looking for a name for some time. as time goes on, however, i realize how fitting this name is for a band here in 2001. People in today's culture see our western lifestyle as liberating; we can do whatever we want. we can watch, listen to, and act like we want. if we want to have rampant sex, kill babies, or screw up our bodies with drugs, alcohol or cigarattes; it is all permissible, for it is "liberating" to be able to do whatever you want no matter who or what you affect. hardly any in todays society care who or what they affect by and through the choices they make. Things like alcohol and sex, which are good in their proper place only become negative when they are abused apart from they way they were meant to be used by those duped into believing they have freedom. i believe that true freedom comes not with the things we can have, but with the things we can live without. it is much more liberating for me to be able to be able to live without depending on cigarattes or cocaine or even the entertainment industry at large. to be free is freedom, rather than duping youself to believe you have freedom trapped in the beast of society. a statement such as this seems to be a contradiction: i am not trying to bash culture as a whole, nor even things like movies, music, etc. i am just saying that dependence is much different that appreciation. You may have read our lyrics and noticed that almost all of our songs are about girls, love; being a young person in america today. as a musician, i feel "at liberty" as it were to be free to write about whatever i am feeling or thinking at the time of writing a song. i do not believe in boxing myself up as a lyricist based on rules someone else created. Freedom of expression through music is one lesson i hope this band does not soon forget.
